Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 2 1/4 cups unsalted butter
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp water or cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream together unsalted butter, vegetable oil, and sugar until fluffy. Add in vanilla extract and eggs, beating until well mixed. Gradually add buttermilk while mixing.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Divide the batter into two bowls. In one bowl, mix melted bittersweet chocolate and black gel icing color into half of the batter. In another bowl, mix red gel icing color into the remaining batter.
  6. Pour alternating spoonfuls of both batters into prepared pans to create a marbled effect.
  7. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let cool in pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  8. Prepare frosting by beating together unsalted butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and vanilla extract. Gradually add water or cream until desired consistency is achieved.
  9. Once cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate, spread frosting on top, then add the second layer on top and frost sides and top.
  10. Drizzle with melted red candy melts mixed with heavy whipping cream for 'blood' effect and decorate with sprinkles as desired.
