- 4 red onions, sliced thin
- 4 tablespoons salted butter
- 4–6 slices hearty white bread
- 3 cups shredded Gruyere cheese
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 tablespoons salted butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup apple juice or apple vinegar
- 1 can beef broth (14.5 oz can)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions in a Dutch oven with butter and sugar over medium heat for about 35 minutes until golden brown.
- In the same pot, create the dipping broth by whisking together butter, flour, apple juice (or vinegar), beef broth, thyme, and pepper until thickened.
- Butter both sides of bread slices and heat in a skillet. Add cheese and caramelized onions between two slices to make sandwiches.
- Cook until the bread is golden and the cheese melts completely. Serve hot with dipping broth.
